Brazilian Formations

Brazil declared war on Germany and Italy on 22 August 1942 and broke off diplomatic relations with Japan. Its initial contribution to the Allied war effort was in the U Boat campaign.

» Brazilian Expeditionary Force

In January 1943, the decision was made for Brazilian troops to join the Allied armies. In December 1943, the first Brazilian troops in the form of a military mission arrived in North Africa. On 16 July 1944, the 1 Expeditionary Infantry Division arrived at Naples. By September, the first Brazilian troops were in the front line. The formation was redesignated as the Brazilian Expeditionary Force. The units were armed, dressed and equipped by the Americans.

The Brazilian Expeditionary Force fought through the latter stages of the Italian campaign under command of the United States formations.
